Our Work
In 2024, federal fishing closures posed a grave threat to Port Renfrew, jeopardizing the local economy and the livelihoods of its residents. Recognizing the urgent need for action, fishermen from across British Columbia and Southern Vancouver Island united to protect the town and its vibrant sportfishing industry. Out of this collective effort, the BC Recreational Fishing Association (BCRFA) was born, marking the beginning of a determined fight against government overreach.
Since our inception, the BCRFA has been unwavering in its commitment to raising awareness about the vital role recreational fishing plays in sustaining communities, preserving cultural heritage, and driving regional economies. Our work is driven by a deep dedication to advocacy, education, and the protection of recreational fishing for future generations.
Safe Catch & Release Practices
Promoting responsible fishing practices is at the core of our mission. The BCRFA actively educates anglers on safe catch-and-release techniques to minimize harm to fish and ensure their survival after release. Through workshops, guides, and community outreach, we equip fishermen with the knowledge and tools needed to handle fish safely, protect vulnerable species, and contribute to sustainable fishing practices. By fostering a culture of stewardship, we aim to preserve our marine ecosystems for generations to come.
Salmon Enhancement
A thriving salmon population is critical not only to our culture and way of life, but to the ecological balance of our waters. A portion of our organization’s profits is dedicated to supporting local hatcheries, which are the backbone of salmon enhancement efforts. Government funding for these facilities is often insufficient, leaving hatcheries under-resourced and unable to fully meet the challenges they face. The BCRFA, in collaboration with committed community members, ensures hatcheries receive the tools, funding, and manpower required to sustain and grow salmon populations. Together, we are investing in the future of salmon and the health of our waterways.
Funding Research Papers
Understanding and preserving our marine ecosystems requires rigorous research and reliable data. To this end, the BCRFA partners with local researchers to support ground breaking studies on the challenges facing recreational fishing and aquatic life. With the help of our supporters and sponsors, we are funding comprehensive research papers that provide actionable insights for policymakers, conservationists, and the fishing community. Although research takes time, our commitment remains steadfast: to fund and promote scientific studies that protect our waters and sustain the sportfishing industry. Our long-term vision includes funding multiple research projects to foster a deeper understanding of our marine environment.
Event Organization
Community engagement is the backbone of our fundraising and awareness efforts. The BCRFA hosts a variety of events, including raffles, fishing derbies, town halls, and networking gatherings, to bring people together in support of recreational fishing. These events not only generate crucial funds for research and data collection but also strengthen community bonds and foster a shared sense of purpose. By creating spaces for collaboration, we amplify our message and build a united front to protect the future of sportfishing in British Columbia.
