Our Mission

Our mission is to advocate for fair, science-driven regulations that balance the conservation of marine life with the needs of coastal communities. We challenge the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to implement policies rooted in data and transparency while empowering recreational fishermen to play an active role in sustainable practices. At the heart of our mission is fostering a vibrant community of fishing enthusiasts and nurturing a deeper appreciation for the sport of fishing as a cherished tradition and vital economic driver.

Longevity

The BC Recreational Fishing Association is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the longevity of the sportfishing industry and the marine ecosystems it depends on. Salmon stocks, once abundant in the Pacific Ocean, experienced a concerning decline over the years. In response, studies were conducted, and hatcheries were established to replenish fish populations and restore balance. Thanks to these collective efforts, recent seasons have seen the largest salmon returns in over a decade - a testament to what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration. While these successes are encouraging, the fight to protect and sustain salmon populations continues. Our mission remains to safeguard this vital resource for future generations of fishermen and coastal communities.

Conservation

Conservation is at the core of our vision for the future. Maintaining healthy salmon and other fish populations in the face of growing environmental and societal demands requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes funding and supporting hatcheries, advancing research and data collection, reducing pollution, protecting critical watersheds, and advocating for government and public investment. Recreational fishermen have always been among the strongest advocates for conservation - stewards of the water who understand its value deeply. Many of us grew up fishing alongside parents or grandparents, and we carry this legacy forward by working to preserve and enhance the ecosystems that sustain our fisheries.

Community

We’re not just building an organization; we’re building a movement. At the BC Recreational Fishing Association, we aim to create a thriving community of anglers who share a passion for fishing, conservation, and connection. This community fosters camaraderie, knowledge-sharing, and collective action to protect and celebrate the sport we love. Together, we can ensure that fishing remains a source of joy, tradition, and economic vitality for generations to come

Tourism

Sportfishing is more than a pastime - it’s a cornerstone of coastal tourism and a vital economic engine for communities across British Columbia. Every year, anglers from around the globe visit our waters, contributing to local businesses and experiencing the natural beauty of our region. By advocating for sustainable fishing practices and maintaining robust fish populations, we ensure that BC continues to be a premier destination for sportfishing enthusiasts. Through our efforts, we’re not just supporting the sport - we’re sustaining the communities and livelihoods that depend on it.
